Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey Remastered

Y’all I friggin’ love word games. An entirely unreasonable amount of time in my life has been spent in word games in some way, shape, or form. A real bibliophile, I am. Letter Quest looked like a reasonable replacement for a game called Bookworm Adventures. In fact, because I’m stupid, I kind of expected it to be.
But you should never expect two things to be too similar. I’d say that this game was definitely inspired by those PopCap titles, but it just doesn’t execute the idea quite as well. That’s not to say it’s a bad game, I’ve put about a day of my life into beating the thing, but once you get through the 30 levels there’s not much of a motivation to go back through and pick up the rest of the unlocks and 100% the thing.
For what it is, it’s okay, and the price is right for me to recommend it, but if you’re looking for something to really sink your teeth into, this word game isn’t it. You’ll be confounded by some of the issues here.
There aren’t any technical issues, as far as I can tell, the game works flawlessly and I never had it crash on me or give me any weird glitches or bugs. The only problem I had was with the extremely weak dictionary used to check words. You’ll be confounded by words not being picked up by the game as valid, even going so far as to look up the word in a dictionary as you gaslight yourself into thinking you were dumb for knowing something was a word in the first place. I’ll save you some time: it’s a word. You spelled it correctly, it’s just one of the bajillion words not contained in the game’s English dictionary.
This is a fairly minor gripe at the same time it’s a major one. If I spend the time to type out a 12 letter word, I sure as heck expect to get credit for the thing in the game I’m playing. I wish I had made note of these words, but I didn’t. Oh well, I’m sure the extremely intelligent people who read my blog will know exactly what I’m talking about when they go to play the game themselves.
8 bucks? It is a steal at this price.
If you’re a completionist, you’re going to find the ultimate completion of the thing to be a total slog. I kept it on my hard drive for an extra day to see if I might want to go back and finish all of the achievements and unlocks, but I think I’m going to move on to something else. It was a good use of time for the duration, however, and you should definitely check it out if you like games of this type, just be prepared to be annoyed by all of the stupid vocabulary issues present in the game, but not your mind.
On a regular grading scale, I’d give it a 6.5 out of 10. There’s enough to keep you playing for more than 20 hours, but not enough to keep you playing for more than 30 unless you’re a truly obsessive completist.
