Otakon Pt. 4: The last thing I’ll post about it.
I'm old as hell.
Now that I’m a month removed from the convention, I’m not as mad as I was about the rude behavior there. It wasn’t by very young people, who were mostly pretty cool. It was by people my age or certainly old enough to know better than to push around people with limited mobility. If you’re one of these people, you’re still a piece of shit.
I also don’t actually have plans of shoving my cane up anyone’s butt or running into them with a mobility scooter or anything else. I was being glib. Hopefully that was clear in my previous post about it, but I wanted to state it again, just to make sure since so many people are giant whiny babies and don’t know how to read meaning into anything anymore, since the art of sarcasm is dead.
Overall Otakon was a fun time, but everything has become so expensive these days.

No, really. We do this every year and it has never been this expensive and I don’t mean the dealer’s room. While the dealer’s room kind of sucked this year because of a lack of neat merchandise, it was all the other stuff that was really expensive. Food, primarily. Food has gotten so expensive that unless you take all the food you’re going to eat with you and sneak it into the convention, you’re going to spend hundreds of dollars on convention center food. It isn’t even that good! It’s your usual basic crap. French fries, chicken tenders, burgers, pre-made sandwiches. Sure, you could buy a pre-made salad, but they were twice as much as the sandwiches and really just not very fresh.
We’re going to have to figure something out for next year because we’re still recovering from what I feel was hardcore wallet pounding.
They also had a few good guests and we enjoyed the panels we went to. The only real problem with the convention now is that it’s gotten too big for its britches. 48,000 people (or so) is just too much for that convention center, especially with the limited accessibility options they can provide. Attendance should probably be capped at around 40,000 which was a perfectly manageable and comfortable number a few years ago.
We’re going to try going to some smaller conventions between now and Otakon next year, and hopefully we’ll see what they’re like. I still have no desire to go to Katsucon, but it’s a possibility, even if it is cursed.
