The Worst Personality Trait: Whining About How Others Spend Their Money
A Dollywood Snowglobe Picture I Stole From Ebay. The Image, Not The Snowglobe.
Hoo-boy. I used to have a friend that did this. That isn’t the reason he’s not my friend anymore, there was a lot of other stuff that happened or, rather, didn’t happen to make that happen. Anyway, I used to know some asshole that really liked to whine about how other people spent their money and pretty much everything else about his life. You know the type of guy that watches videos on YouTube then gets really upset because he thinks he’s constantly being attacked for being a white man even though that never actually happened in real life ever? He was that guy. That being said, I actually really liked the dude, and still do, I don’t hold grudges and anything terrible that happened between us was years ago. Hope he’s doing well.
But I digress… He used to talk about how stupid it was that people spent their money on things they didn’t need, all the while spending plenty of his own money on Pop figures and X-Box games. As you know, those are necessities. He did not seem to understand the concept that just because he didn’t like something that someone else did doesn’t mean that the other person is stupid. You know, the concept of doing whatever you want?
It was really as if he felt that in order for someone to enjoy something – record collecting, basket weaving, Pokemon cards, clipping toenails, you name it – he had to be consulted first for approval, otherwise you were a low-IQ low-testosterone man child soy boy who didn’t deserve the money you get paid at your job scooping garbage or flipping burgers or whatever. No, you were too stupid to know how to properly spend your own money, so you needed to be talked down to like an idiot.
I know the focus of this whining post has been about one person in particular, but I know several people that do it. Not to the same degree, but basically the same thing. In person, I’m far too passive and in my own world to ever actually call this out and do anything about it in the moment — but when something has triggered the thought and I’m sitting in front of my computer doing nothing important at all other than looking at stupid shit I’d like to spend my own money on — you better watch out, pal!

Habits like this are exactly why I buy the dumbest gifts I can possibly conceive of for them. That’s why you’re all getting Dollywood snow globes from the 80’s for every Christmas for the rest of your lives. Because it’s my money, and I can spend it on any stupid shit I want. SHUT UP!!!
This really has become a pet peeve that sets me off.
