Don’t Be An Annoying Christian – Not preaching, don’t worry.

You’re making us look bad. I’m a Christian. There is no other qualifying statement to that, no ifs, ands, or buts, I’m a Christian. A really terrible one! But I do the best I can.

Anyway – I came across this story the other day:

I highly suggest you read the article and maybe watch a snippet of the video there to get an idea of what this blog is about, or it won’t make any sense at all.

Now that you’ve done that, let me go on a rant about it:

I don’t know what these people think they are doing when they stand up before, during, or after a flight, and start yelling at people about Jesus Christ – but I don’t believe they’re doing, “The Lord’s work.” I think what they’re doing is causing people discomfort and unease. The reactions would range from enthusiastic support – probably from other Christians that think they’re really doing everyone a favor and supporting Christ by being a busybody, to severely annoyed.

As I said, I’m a Christian, and I would be annoyed. This sort of thing doesn’t make us look good and only serves to support stereotypes and negative opinions about our religion. But then if these people considered that, they wouldn’t be the center of attention, would they? I question whether they’re actually doing this for God or for themselves.

One of the things I’ve observed from non-Christians firsthand is a vehement response to having religious beliefs shoved up their nose by a loudmouth. If I’m not being clear, these loudmouths on planes are shoving their religion onto people. For the most part outside of that, everyone I’ve talked to has been rather accepting of Christianity, at worst indifferent but clear that it’s not for them. Fair enough, it’s not my job to try and force anyone to subscribe to my religious beliefs. Even if it were, I would have a deep ethical issue with doing so.

The idea that these people have a captive audience and they’re proud of it is bizarre – this could, if it hasn’t already, end in violence one way or another. Can anyone remember a past time where religious fanatics started talking very loudly on planes? Consider how this could come across to the wrong person.

I think maybe I would be less uncomfortable with people doing this sort of thing if they maybe just said, “Hey, I’m Annie, if you want to hear about Jesus talk to me!” – But to stand up in front of everyone like you’re doing them some kind of favor by screaming it in their face when they can’t get away is insane.

For all the curse words, crappy thoughts, and stupid things I do on a daily basis, I’ve never thought that anyone wanted me to get right in their face and scream my religious beliefs at them when they’re in no position to get away from me. A flight is already a stressful thing to do since the last couple of years have seen the highest instances of planes falling out of the sky for no apparent reason that I’ve ever noticed. To be clear, I have no data to back this up, I’m just saying that I won’t be getting on any planes for a long time…no matter how badly I want to go to Japan.
